From the Bare Stem
Reginald Snell

The magnificent garden at Dartington Hall, a medieval manor in South Devon, is unique in the British Isles for many reasons, most notably because it was created as part of Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst's Utopian experiment in 'rural reconstruction'. Its walks were laid out, its grand vistas opened, not for the private pleasure of one wealthy landowning family, but for the delight and inspiration of all those who have been connected with Dartington's pioneering work in the fields of art and education during the past sixty years.

From the Bare Stem is the fascinating story of the making of the garden at Dartington. It is a tribute to the energy and vision of Dorothy Elmhirst, and it will be enjoyed by everyone who shares her love for beautiful gardens.

The Book of Dartington Parish
Michael G.D. MacLening

This book tells the story of the parish of Dartington. The village itself lies in the picturesque South Hams area of South Devon, two miles from the ancient town of Totnes, and the 12-mile parish boundary encompasses many hamlets, with 14th century thatched, cob walled cottages, some of the oldest in the West of England.

First mentioned in AD883 as Dartington-ham, and in the Domesday Book of 1086, the Manor was held by one of William the Conqueror's Norman captains. For centuries on one of the oldest trade routes in the country, pack horses loaded with tin, wool and hides from Dartmoor passed through on their way to the ships on the River Dart at Totnes.

With the arrival of the Elmhirsts in 1926, big developments took place, new housing estates were built and industries started, along with what became the famous Dartington College of Arts. During early 1944 the Parish was 'occupied' by American troops prior to the D-Day landings. Today The Shops at Dartington (formerly known as The Cider Press Centre) is a major attraction in what remains one of Devon's best-known parishes.

Dartington Hall - One Endless Garden

The photographs of Carol Ballenger, with quotes from Dorothy Elmhirst's Garden Notebook.

In its magnificent setting just above the tidal reaches of the River Dart in Devon, Dartington Hall dates back to the fourteenth century and its landscapes have been used and shaped for generations. In 1925 Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst acquired the neglected house and garden, and with considerable resources they were able to put their ideas for social and rural regeneration into practise - an endeavour they called "The English Experiment". The photographs in this book are the result of many years exploring this inspiring landscape and reflect the ethos of the place as embraced by the Elmhirsts, the founders of the modern Dartington.

"Carol Ballenger's enchanting photographs are evocative, contemplative and sensuous. She has been able to portray the different moods and seasons of Dartington Hall Gardens in a way that fields, forests and flowers come to life" - Satish Kumar

"Carol Ballenger has a remarkable eye for what conveys the essence of the place" - Graham Hardman, Japanese Garden Society, UK.

"A true artist with an enviable talent for capturing those special transient moments within her photography: a leafy pattern on a wet stone; a knotty root breaking the moss; or moody views floating above and beyond arable fields - all these capture the moment and hint at so much more." - Graham A. Gammin, former Dartington Grounds & Gardens Manager
